Community Involvement

We are very lucky to have such active community involvement here at George Watts Montessori! We get many volunteers through our partnership with Duke University. Our students are served by America Reads and America Counts tutors, Project Child and a variety of field practice students in a tutorial capacity. Duke provides a Wellness Center that is located on our campus. It is staffed by an RN and a receptionist and includes two exam rooms and an administrative office. Students may visit the Wellness Center for immunizations, physicals, treatment of minor accidents and childhood illnesses. We team with Duke Performances and Office of Community Affairs to engage our students in cultural experiences, such as Opera performances, plays and musicals.
We are also supported by “Friends of Watts Street School”. It is comprised of George Watts’ alumni, dating back to 1926, as well as neighboring residents and interested friends with the mission to keep the school going. They have provided, through their membership dues, more than $20,000.00 for books, field trips and classroom supplies and awards. They were instrumental in advocating the change from a traditional program to Montessori.
The Trinity Park Association is composed of neighborhood residents. Their mission is to preserve the integrity of the historic and beautiful Trinity Park neighborhood. They give an annual donation to George Watts Montessori and have sponsored many beautification days to provide services for the lawn in front of the school.
Many other county organizations/corporations contribute monetarily and provide services, such as North Carolina Central University, Kroger, Food Lion, Harris Teeter, Strawbridge Studios, The Play House Toy Store, Faith Based Organizations and the Durham County Health Department.
